ElevenLabs Free Tier: What You Actually Get (And When You Have to Pay)

Everyone tells you to “just try ElevenLabs for free.” Nobody tells you what you actually get before it asks for a credit card. So I signed up for the free plan and used it until I hit the walls, so you know exactly where they are.
Short version: the free tier is genuinely useful, and also genuinely designed to make you want to pay. Both things are true. Here is the honest breakdown.
What you actually get for $0
The free plan gives you 10,000 credits a month — that is roughly 10 minutes of generated audio. It resets monthly. Within that, you get access to the core stuff:
- Text to Speech (the main event)
- Speech to Text
- Sound effects and Voice Design
- Music
- 3 projects in Studio
Ten minutes of audio a month is enough to test everything properly, narrate a short video, or mess around with voices for a weekend. For a lot of people just kicking the tires, the free tier is where you should start. Do not pay until you have hit a wall.
The three walls you will hit
Here is where the free tier taps you on the shoulder and points at the pricing page.
1. The 10-minute ceiling. It sounds like a lot until you are iterating. You will burn credits re-generating the same line to get the delivery right. A single serious project can eat your whole month.
2. No commercial license. This is the big one. On the free plan you cannot commercially use what you make, and attribution to ElevenLabs is expected. The second you want to put that voiceover in a YouTube video with ads, a client project, or anything that makes money, you need a paid plan. Commercial use starts at the Starter tier ($6/month).
3. No instant voice cloning. Cloning your own voice — the feature half the internet signs up for — is not on the free plan. Instant Voice Cloning starts at Starter; the higher-quality Professional Voice Cloning is a Creator-tier feature.
So is the free tier worth it?
Yes — as a test drive, not a destination. Use it to answer one question: does the voice quality actually hold up for what I need? Generate your real script, in your real use case, and listen critically. If it sounds good and you keep hitting the 10-minute wall, that is your signal the paid plan will pay for itself.
If you already know you will use it commercially or want to clone a voice, the free plan cannot do those things at all — so you would just be confirming the quality before upgrading.
